As winter slowly approaches, people’s thoughts often turn to what creatures might be seeking your home for refuge as the weather gets colder. Because of this, it’s important that you prepare your house and discourage pests before they can become a problem. Below you will find part one of our “Winter Tips” for preparing your house for winter pests.

Prepping Against Winter Pests – Part 1

1. Get Rid of Moisture Accumulation

Accumulation of water in your house can happen as a result of: leaky pipes, clogged drains, and cracks in the basement wall. Termites love these moist conditions because they are drawn to the cellulose that is made readily accessible by damp wood. Considering how pricey termite treatment can get, it’s good to consider termite prevention one of the best “treatments” you can get. Before fall is over, it’s recommended that you fix all leaks or drainage issues in your home.

2. Seal Cracks and Holes

If there’s a nook or cranny to invade through, chances are termites will find a way. These “perimeter weaknesses” can be found in cracks in your foundation or gaps around doors. Do a thorough investigation of these areas and make sure they’re sealed up. You can use caulk around windows to fill in small cracks as well as the small openings around entry points of utilities. If you have larger holes and cracks, use steel wool to seal these off. Also check that chimneys and vents are screened.

3. Weather Stripping

Weather stripping can be used for more than just keeping the cold air out and the warm air in. It can also be used for keeping out pests like termites. Weather stripping your home’s exterior doors, or replacing already existing weather stripping if it’s cracked or worn can help keep pests out.
